Maggie May was found as a stray running loose near a lake, emaciated and suffering from an untreated skin infection. The good samaritan who rescued her and brought her to the veterinary clinic we were working at was unable to pay for the medical care she needed and she was to be euthanized.
It seemed unfair not to give her a chance when all she seemed to need was a good diet and some TLC so, even though we already had six other rescued pets, most of whom required medication and special care for chronic health issues, we took responsibility for her and took her home. Maggie quickly adapted to life as a pampered housepet and even came to accept the other animals with some careful introduction – though she does have a high prey drive and needs to be supervised around cats and small animals. She is housebroken, crates well, and knows basic obedience commands. She is non-destructive and good at keeping herself entertained with her nylabones and other toys.
It is with great regret that we have realized we are not the best ‘forever home’ for her and are seeking to find her the family she deserves. With both of us no longer in the veterinary field now and the special needs of the rescues that came before her, the vet bills are literally bankrupting us. We love her but she deserves a better home than we can give her and it is also not fair to her that she has to be crated for a good part of each day when we are not home. Her ultimate dream in life would be to spend that time snoozing on a couch.
Maggie loves to go on walks and hikes and was born to run! Her perfect home would have a fair sized fenced area where she could indulge in her favorite pastime of doing laps. Seriously, this dog could probably outrun anything but a sighthound and would probably do great in agility or flyball… but knows when to relax, too. We just can’t say enough about what an awesome dog she is and just want to give her a chance to shine.
